Federal Priorities

The 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) program is the only federal funding explicitly for expanded learning programs. This funding supports more than 600 programs throughout the state, representing almost 300,000 kids. Many California programs depend on this funding, particularly summer learning programs and programming for high school students (for which this is the only public funding source).

President Trump’s budget blueprint, proposed in March, calls for the elimination of 21st CCLC funding in Fiscal Year 2018. These dramatic cuts would be devastating for students and families in California and around the nation. In California, this threat is compounded by stagnant funding from the state, forcing many to cut programming and staff hours.

Over the next several months, Congress will review this proposal and decide what it will prioritize in the federal budget. In partnership with CA3, we’ll be tracking the federal budget process, providing updates via social media and our newsletter, and also organizing advocacy activities around the state with the goal of preserving the 21st CCLC investment.
