expanded learning workforce

We are working to increase the recognition of the expanded learning workforce by promoting and advancing career pathways and pipelines, and creating a statewide workforce campaign.

WHY FOCUS ON the expanded learning workforce?

California boasts the largest and one of the highest-rated expanded learning systems in the nation, which relies on the quality of and investment in its workforce. Just as quality teachers are linked to improved student outcomes, quality expanded learning staff are the most important factor in student success.

Our impact

  • Launched the first-ever expanded learning apprenticeship program in California in partnership with Girls Inc. of Alameda County, Berkeley City College, and the California AfterSchool Network

  • Expanded learning staff are now included in the Classified School Employee Teacher Credentialing Program, a result of our advocacy efforts with the California Afterschool Advocacy Alliance (CA3) in 2021

  • The Power of Us Workforce Survey is the first-of-its kind national survey of youth-serving professionals, designed to explore, define, and elevate the work of youth-serving professionals.

New Workforce Development Network

We launched a new community of practice to create a stronger network of youth-serving community-based organizations rooted in collaboration, shared resources, and strong, standardized workforce development practices to support staff, youth, and their families. 3LN convenes 16 workforce development practitioners to build community, promote collaboration and collective action by testing new strategies and innovations, and share their learnings and resources with the expanded learning field.
