We promote the importance of summer learning, help district leaders launch or improve their summer programs, and advocate for public funding to ensure all children have access to high-quality summer learning programs.

Why summer?

High-quality summer learning programs change students’ lives for the better, improving academic achievement and readiness to learn. Summer learning provides uniquely innovative opportunities for learning and enrichment, like field trips, hands-on projects, and camp-like activities that mirror the opportunities afforded to more affluent students. Unlike traditional summer school, high-quality summer learning programs make learning meaningful and engaging.

Our impact

• Trained nearly 1,000 educators, district administrators, and community partners through our Summer Game Plan webinar series.

• Built statewide support for summer learning and changed the public attitude for how learning can look in the summer through educating policymakers, education leaders, and the general public on the value of summer learning programs through the Summer Matters Campaign.

• Collaborated with a dozen diverse school districts to plan and implement models of high-quality summer programs.

• Cultivated over 150 district champions for summer learning across California.

• Passed state legislative and administrative policies supporting summer learning and creating opportunities for thousands of students in California.
