Family Guide to Afterschool for All in California
California is investing $4 billion every year in afterschool and summer learning programs. Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, nearly all students should have access to these programs.
Partnership for Children & Youth and Innovate Public Schools created this tool to provide parents and guardians with all the information they need to understand the Expanded Learning Opportunities Program (ELO-P), how it can support their child’s educational journey, and how to effectively advocate for expanded learning programs in their community.
This tool offers families the following features:
ELO-P Overview: An in-depth explanation of what ELO-P is, its goals, and how it benefits students in California.
What to Look For: Families who are searching for or participating in their school’s ELO-P programs for the first time can use this checklist to assess whether their district is taking advantage of available ELO-P funding for students.
What to Ask: This list of questions can help families have an informative conversation with their students’ school and/or district leaders about the specific opportunities for students in their area.
Examples of Success: These examples of school districts that have successfully used ELO-P funding to provide additional opportunities to students can be helpful for districts still building out an afterschool program.
By equipping families with this valuable tool, we aim to foster greater understanding and engagement in expanded learning programs, ultimately leading to improved outcomes for students across California.
